Adam and I met at church in the Fall of 2007. He was a Junior and I was a Freshman in college. We were at the college ministry's Sunday night service. My girlfriend Andrea and I sat down at a table and the next thing we knew all of the other chairs were filled with boys. One of those boys happened to be a blonde-haired blue-eyed boy named Adam. We formally introduced ourselves, then after the service Adam stopped me to talk. He said, "So... uh... I have a boat..." He convinced me that he just wanted my number so he could call me the next time a bunch of people went out on his boat. He never called me to go boating. He didn't call me or talk to me again for three weeks, in fact.
I decided to go early to church one Wednesday night to help greet. Surprise, surprise-- Adam was there too. Earlier that Wednesday I had actually gone through a rather tragic event. I came home to find that someone had left the gate to my backyard open and my dog Rammer was missing. It only took me five minutes to find him-- in my neighbor's backyard-- but it was traumatic none the less. So when I approached the front steps at church that night I was searching for someone to hear about my awful day. Adam waved eagerly and asked the question I had been wanting to hear: "How was your day?" We struck up a conversation and he proceeded to tell me about his dogs and how he thought he had lost them one time. He was so sweet and in the back on my mind I thought, "Hmm. A dog lover, eh?" We talked a little while longer, and then I politely excused myself to go pass out bulletins.
Just as I was about to put the bulletins down and go find a seat in the dark and very loud sanctuary, I saw Adam walking towards me. The music was blaring so he leaned in to ask me, "Do you wanna go eat at City Cafe tomorrow?" I responded to him, "Sure! I love City Cafe!" He then said something that made me realize he had tricked me, "OK, great! I'll come pick you up!" I had just agreed to a date and I did not even know it.
He came and picked me up at my house which I proudly identified as, "the one with the black Z71 parked in front of it." (Come to find out, Adam loved the fact that I drove a big truck). He knocked on the door, met an unwilling Rammer, and we gingerly trotted out to his Jeep. Adam then did something my dad had been doing for me for years: he opened the car door for me. In that moment I realized that this boy was different. We went to City Cafe-- had a fabulous time--, he paid for my lunch (such a gentleman), drove by his house to meet his dogs, and then he dropped me off at my house. I drove home that weekend and did not hear from Adam the entire time (he told me later he did that on purpose). After that, We didn't let 4 hours go by without talking or seeing one another. Adam and I both knew about two weeks into our relationship that God had placed us into each other's life and that we were going to marry each other. Fast-forward three years...
It's my 21st birthday and I think Adam and I are just going to eat by ourselves at Northriver Country Club... but SURPRISE! I walk in and my family, his family, and friends are waiting with cameras to help me celebrate my 21st birthday. An hour goes by and Mr. Steve (Adam's dad) starts lighting the candles on my cake. He says, "Make a wish!" I wished for the same thing I had been wishing and praying for since I met Adam: I want to get engaged to Adam and I want it to be a surprise! As soon as I blew out the candles Mr. Steve says, "what did you wish for?" I laughed and said, "I can't tell you that!" Adam leans close to me and whispers, "I want to make your wish come true." Then he got down on one knee, pulled out the prettiest ring I have ever seen and asked me to marry him! It was everything I could have ever hoped for! Thanks to all my friends and family, and especially Adam, for making that one of the best nights of my life!
Adam and I were engaged for 14 months which gave me plenty of time to plan the wedding of my dreams-- well maybe not plenty. Throw in nursing school, a devastating tornado, our canceled college graduation, moving half-way across the country, and medical school and it turned out to be just enough time.
We celebrated our graduation on May 6th even though it had been canceled because of the tornado, and we got married less than a month later. Talk about a whirlwind! God has a crazy, amazing, and perfect plan for our life. I could not be happier with where we are now and I can't wait to see where else He takes us.
